Button Box Gang

There’s something so cheerful about polka music, even if it invokes a memory of a fierce lady instructor propelling me around the floor while shouting instructions to other dancers and lecturing me about how I was doing it all wrong while my friends snickered from the sidelines. What can I say? She was right; I’m not a particularly talented dancer.

Despite this traumatizing event, I still like a bit of polka now and then, as I was reminded when I encountered the Button Box Gang on July 4th.

Anchorage Community Works – Making a More Vibrant Anchorage

I’m so in love with Anchorage Community Works idea to create “a place for Anchorage creatives to think, work, and play.” The founders, Brooklyn Baggett, Cody Augdahl, Craig Updegrove, and Paul Clark, launched a Kickstarter campaign to purchase equipment and furnishings for the warehouse facility in Ship Creek.

Saturday and Sunday marked the Anchorage Home Builders Association 2013 Spring Preview of Homes – Anchorage is filled with talented designers and builders, and it’s always fun to see their newest designs. This year, my friend Mary called and told me that she’d been touring the homes and found one in particular she thought I would enjoy – #9 on the map, by Glacier Homes at North Point Bluff.

Outside Magazine and Alaska Distillery Awesomeness

When I was younger and worked at Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking, my favorite magazine was Outside.  Over the years, I slowly stopped reading it in favor of fashion and shelter magazines (and now, I seldom buy magazines at all – I prefer blogs and websites these days. Plus, 16 ways to curl my hair and a quiz to find out if he thinks I’m THE ONE just aren’t all that fascinating any more, although reading about DIY furniture rehab and how to pick the right shade of gray for your living room still make me inordinately happy) but recently it’s worked its way back into my awareness.
