AEDC Anchorage 2013 Economic Forecast: We’re Still Doing Well

Still doing well

The AEDC 2013 Economic Forecast for Anchorage was today, and they did a great job, as usual.  In addition to the forecast, they also provided a Live.Work.Play. update and brought Richard Florida, author of Rise of the Creative Class, to Anchorage.  Today, I’m focusing on the forecast.

Aerial Investigation: Becky Kendall & the Light Brigade

Becky Kendall

When I started this blog, I had a passing concern that I might, one day, have written about everything I love about Anchorage and be done. Granted, it hasn’t even been a year, but so far, there’s no end in sight.  Maybe I’m just more open, but it seems like every day I find things to love that I want to share with you. Today for instance: I was idly browsing Facebook and ran across this link: Becky Kendall and the Light Brigade.

TEDx Anchorage, March 2012

Aaron Cooke @ TEDxAnchorage

I was really excited to discover that Anchorage does TEDx.  Really, really excited.  Apparently, the event has been held in previous years, but somehow I missed it.  On one hand, I can’t believe I didn’t know about this (it was held at the library, so I feel like I should have known!) and on the other, I’m excited that it’s something totally new for me to discover.

Joey Fender & the 55’s @ Blues Central TONIGHT

Joey Fender & the 55's

Last night we dropped into Blues Central to catch a bit of Joey Fender and the 55’s performance – we’d heard that he was an incredible guitar player, plus I had a romantic vision of Blues Central in my mind: dark and smokey, with raspy blues filling every corner of your brain and the bar.

Beer and Painting: Scott Clendaniel

Scott Clendaniel

One of the best parts of high school is when it’s long over, re-meeting people and learning about their journeys.

Scott Clendaniel’s journey so far includes becoming an artist who splits his time between McCarthy, Anchorage, and various adventures.  I remember him, back in the high school days, as simmering with energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity about everything.   It’s fun to see how he’s directed those characteristics into his work.

Maury Annual Studio Show and Open House

I mentioned the Maury Annual Studio Show and Open House last week (I hope you got a chance to go!), and stopped by for a visit this weekend.  It’s one of my favorite early winter traditions, and I never fail to leave without something beautiful to take home. This year I picked out a bright turquoise bowl that is the perfect accent color for my living room bookcases.

Because Toni, Ashley, and Scott are some of my favorite local artists, I’m going to do a separate post for each one of them.  First up, Toni!

Fashion is for the Dogs

Or at least, it was last night at Second Run.

Grover and I missed the 7th Annual Dog Fashion Show, much to my disappointment (and probably his elation…if only he knew what I someday hope to subject him to, he would never cuddle with me again!) but I did swing by before it started to snap a quick photo of Gizmo, resident Second Run dog, and master of fashion (you don’t think he posed next to that color coordinating feed bucket bag from Dooney & Burke by accident, do you? He is one clever canine, and such a cutie!).

Pottery for Sale, Tomorrow!

All my pretty pottery

I love pottery.  I think it’s the perfect blend of function and art.  The best part is using it every day and admiring the colors, patterns, and textures, knowing that someone made it by hand.  I have a collection at home of mugs from various places around the country (mostly Alaska, from our local potters) and beautiful plates and bowls that were wedding gifts.

Christmas in Spenard

Christmas in Spenard” is back at the Taproot!  It’s wacky, tacky, irreverent, and generally hilarious.  It’s not all Christmas-themed; they throw in a good dose of political skewering, Alaska humor, and a dash of Spam just so that they don’t forget their roots.

They sing, they dance, and they make you laugh so hard you choke on your drink – get your tickets now!
