People, places, things, and ideas I love in Anchorage, AK
If you’re standing at the corner of 5th and G, you’ve probably noticed the yellow-tiled half-globe nestled in a crook of the Alaska Center for Performing Arts. This is a replica of the sun (complete with accurate sun spots!) and is the start of Anchorage’s Light Speed Planet Walk, which was inspired when Eli Menaker visited the Carl Sagan Memorial Planet Walk in Ithaca, New York.
Apart from the gigantic produce, adorable baby pigs, ferris wheel, crazy fair hair, curious goats, people watching, Bret Michaels/Phillip Phillips/Foreigner/Bill Cosby/whichever-act-has-sunk-low-enough-or-not-risen-fast-enough-and-is-on-the-fair-circuit, local artists, and hawkers who shout, “Hey you! Yeah, you with the face!” people seem to go the State Fair for the food.
The Local Harvest Feast is tomorrow. I won’t be able to make it, but the invitation inspired me to finally try making my own all-Alaska meal.
I stopped by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce “Make it Monday” forum – Anchorage and the Arts to learn about what the 2013/2014 season will look like.

I encountered this lovely mural and its creator, Apayo, outside Covenant House the other evening.
But it shouldn’t be. So I’m going to share it with all of you: the Muse patio at the Anchorage Museum is AWESOME.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting some of the rumored new restaurant ventures downtown, and on Friday, one of them opened: Flattop Pizza and Pool, self described as, “Pizza, pool, beer, full bar…is there anything more you need?”
We met some friends there Saturday night to decide for ourselves.
“You can eat a burger anywhere,” said the owner of the White Spot when I asked for his recommendation re: burger v. halibut sandwich.
