Perfect Peonies

A few years ago, I traveled to Seattle for a friend’s wedding, and had an awakening.  I’d never paid much attention to peonies before, but that weekend, they were everywhere: beautifying the bridal bouquet (you can see them if you click the link and scroll through the photos), artfully arranged (so that they looked perfectly un-arranged) in a vase in the guest bathroom of the home where I was staying, and spilling over fences in neighborhood gardens around Green Lake.  Suddenly, it seemed peonies were everywhere, in home decor, clothing, poems, and strangely enough, in Alaska.

Market Fresh

Every Wednesday morning, I drink a sip of coffee and click Anchorage Daily News‘ latest Market Fresh column by Steve Edwards. Steve and I used to be co-workers, so I’d get to quiz him about his column in person; now that I can’t loiter at his desk, reading Market Fresh is a weekly treat that makes me miss working with him – an incredibly talented, warm, and funny guy!  He also writes the Alaskology blog.

A good friend of mine is getting ready to vacation in Mexico.  I have to say, I’m a bit envious of her as I look out my window to a mostly gray day and shiver.  I’m more than ready for some hot sun in my life, or at least green grass and leaves on the trees!  I long to wander down a street in Mexico, warm air on my skin, flip-flops on my feet, and music in the air.

For the Love of Coffee

When she found out that I was writing a blog about Anchorage, my high school BFF asked if I’d be posting about Kaladi Bros.  If you know me outside of this blog, you’re probably wondering why that wasn’t my very first post!  In fact, it almost was.  But my love affair with coffee is deeper that just a drink, and therefore, harder to write about.
