Tonight was my first visit to Anchorage Community Works. I was a super fan back in May 2013 during the Kickstarter campaign, but somehow timing just never worked out for me to visit. But, tonight was “Emergence,” the first annual fundraiser and art auction. A friend invited us, so off we went for an art-filled evening of fun!

How many Anchorage residents have memories of Locomotive 556?

The steam engine, one of twelve “Gypsy Rose” locomotives (named after a famous burlesque dancer) sent to Alaska in 1943, has been a fixture on the Anchorage Park Strip since 1959 after retiring from  hauling passengers and freight along the Seward-Anchorage-Fairbanks route.

Love Note: Bernie’s Bungalow Patio

The grass is still yellow, the sunshine a bit watery and cold, and no leaves have emerged yet… but the patio at Bernie’s Bungalow is open! One of Anchorage’s best outdoor spaces for an after work aperitif, it features lion sculptures, a dragon water fountain, and an archway made out of what might be bumpers… a bit random, sure, but when the sun is shining, live music is rocking, and it’s summertime in Alaska, Bernie’s is a great place to be. Plus, they have a generous supply of heat lamps just in case it gets chilly…
