Slow Your Drift with Downdogs and Salty Dogs

Making bath salts

After a rowdy Saturday night of House of Cards (okay, not so rowdy) a morning of yoga, salt-making, and a little breakfast booze was just what I needed for a refreshing Sunday.

Jess of Drift Yoga hosted Downdogs and Salty Dogs at Anchorage Community House – I was a bit late but made it in time for the restorative portion of the yoga session where I discovered that placing tennis balls under my upper back does wonders for relieving tension and releasing stress (seriously, try it).

Next, we learned how to turn two mason jars of water from Prince William Sound into light, flakey sea salt while preparing greyhounds (Alaska Distillery Frostbite vodka, grapefruit juice, mint leaves, and ice with a rim of sea salt and freshly grated lime zest) and then Jess turned us loose on the essential oils, dried flowers and herbs, and sea salt to create bath bombs and soaking salts. In between salty creations we snacked on a delicious winter salad, cheese, nuts, honey, fresh veggies, and wild Alaska salmon.

My favorite new treat is a combination of goat cheese on crusty bread with a drizzle of honey, dried fig, and a sprinkle of red wine infused sea salt. So so good. As much as I adore essential oils and a hot bath, I can’t wait to try out the sea salt on all sorts of dishes – maybe a roast or the buttered radishes a fellow saltress recommended.

I left with a cozy new “Slow your drift” hoodie (artwork by my favorite Salmon Sisters), a pleasantly full belly, luxurious handmade bath products and sea salt in hand, and a smile on my face.

Thanks Drift Yoga!
