I am AWAIC on New Year’s Day (#ilovekbc)

I am AWAIC

Like most people, I fall prey to resolution-making for the new year. My resolutions generally fit into the category of “be better at everything” and are often hard to keep. But despite knowingly setting myself up for failure, one way I always start the new year feeling good is stopping by a Kaladi Brothers coffee shop.

Although frequenting my favorite purveyor of caffeinated beverages is already a regular occurrence, and is slightly self serving because I’m generally in dire need of a super strong cuppa after late night celebrating, the feel good factor is this:

All New Year’s Day coffee drink sales at Anchorage and Wasilla Kaladi locations will go to support women and children trying to escape domestic violence situations through the programs of the Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis (AWAIC). For more than 20 years, the coffee roaster has donated its New Year’s Day sales to an Alaska nonprofit. For the third year in a row, Shell Alaska will match Kaladi’s donation and any online gifts made on New Year’s Day, increasing the impact of the program. As in previous years, Kaladi baristas volunteer their time on New Year’s Day and work only for tips.

You can also make a donation here or drop off the following items at the participating cafes:

  • New undergarments
  • Diapers
  • Hair styling items
  • Sheets
  • Towels
  • Gift cards for Carrs, Freds, Costco, etc.

It’s  so very sad and scary that more than 50 percent of women in Anchorage have experienced intimate partner violence or rape (or both) and even though it’s just a cup of coffee on Jan. 1, I’m looking forward to being AWAIC in the new year.

I hope to see all your “I am AWAIC” sticker selfies on Facebook on Thursday!
