These are the Best Days…

Flower bubbly

The unplanned days that slowly unfold into the delight of sharing small pleasures and adventures with friends.

The days when you don’t have much planned, and a friend calls you to go for a walk in the  springtime sunshine, so you do.  While you’re walking, you remember a photography presentation scheduled for today, and so you head to the museum to soak in some art.

As you wait for the lecture to begin, you decide a glass of bubbly would be the perfect complement to the fun you’ve had so far, and so after enjoying vibrant portraits of Anchorage, you head to the Mermaid, where you dine on hearty soup and bruschetta, and sip champagne.  You make friendly small talk with the colorful old guy and the girl with the accent, and bask in the sun, feeling lucky to spend the day with a good friend.

And then, more friends arrive!  And more bubbly!  And the discovery that there is much to celebrate, and therefore, the day sippin’ must continue. And so you share the bottle with the beautiful flowers on it that you have always wanted to try, and learn that the flowers are there because of the strangely pungent scent of the champagne, which is fascinating and slightly off-putting until you take a sip and discover that despite the slight stink it tastes just dreamy (much like good cheese or truffles?).

You order espresso, and it’s served in a shot glass with a mini Bialette that is just so cute you can hardly stand to drink it (but of course, you do, and it’s excellent). And then Apollo reveals one of the mysteries of D street – there ARE apartments above the businesses on the street level (so cool!) which makes me think there are more hidden downtown dwellings to be found.

And then, with a brand new downtown dining sticker on your card, you’re off…and on to more fun in the form of a rigorous game of darts at the Pioneer, and more celebrating because your brother soloed for the first time, and is well on his way to following in your father’s footsteps as a pilot.

The night ends with a stop at Uncle Joe’s Pizza for a slice and another stamp. You glory in the setting sun behind sleeping lady and head home to an armful of puppy love and a general glow of happiness.

Just another great day in Anchorage.
