Choose Respect 2013

Respect Now

Today was Governor Parnell’s Choose Respect rally, which raises awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault. More than 140 communities are participating this year. In Anchorage, we marched from the park strip to town square to the wailing of bagpipes and deep drum beats.

Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell and Senator Lisa Murkowski both spoke, but the speech of the day came from a survivor named Connie. Her message was one of hope and resilience, and she spoke about how the support of a community can and will make a difference for people trying to safely leave abusive relationships.

I was proud to be part of such a great event again, but as many said, showing up for one day of awareness isn’t going to do it – as a community, as a state, we all need to work together to show that being “the rape capital of the US” isn’t an option.

It’s time to choose respect, now and for the future.

I love Anchorage. I love what it is, what it's been, and what I dream it will be. I share my adventures with DJ (my husband), my fabulous family and friends, two frenchies named Grover and Teddy, and now, all of you. If you love Anchorage too, get in touch - guest posts are welcome!

  1. Hi Gretchen, You have such an interesting job! You might be interested in the Respect campaign that the Portland Trailblazers are doing right now for bullying.

They are doing all kinds of media events, ads, promotions. It is so cool to see a humble young man take this on as he is quickly becoming quite a star in the NBA. Proud to have him on our team.

    1. I just checked out the link you sent me, that’s another great campaign! Thanks for sharing it. I forgot how much you and Keith love basketball, hows the team doing?
