Blueberries @ Denali Montessori School

More urban foraging!  I just discovered the blueberries at Denali Montessori School, bordering 9th Ave.  Between the strawberries at the museum, the blueberries at Denali, and the salmon in ship creek, my husband (or bears!) could almost create his favorite dinner.  Not all harvested at the same time, of course – the few fish I saw at the hatchery the other day were starting to look a little bedraggled… but the blueberries look great!

I love Anchorage. I love what it is, what it's been, and what I dream it will be. I share my adventures with DJ (my husband), my fabulous family and friends, two frenchies named Grover and Teddy, and now, all of you. If you love Anchorage too, get in touch - guest posts are welcome!

  1. Alaska blueberries are so much better than Washington blueberries- and a lot cheaper! When Cathy, Nancy and Andrew were all at UAF and we drove them back to school in the fall, we would stop at the top of a pass before Denali (I’ve forgotten names!) where there were blueberries galore and we would scrabble on hands and knees picking them – free, of course. . Here they grow on tree-sized bushes. The birds eat most of the berries on our two bushes. Now we drive five miles south to a blueberry pick-your-own farm. We stand upright to pick the almost- cherry-size berries, and pay $1.75 a pound for doing it!
