Driving by Ducks

Sometimes when I drive to work, I detour to one of my favorite stretches of road.  I cruise by Wonderbread’s Sunrise Bakery, past the cool new Hillcrest/Spenard sign, and down the hill.

I love the way the road sweeps down and around the bend, with views of the lagoon, inlet, and mountains to the left, and silly painted ducks to the right. The bike trail is generously sized which makes the road feel narrow (which strangely, I like), and the light poles curve over the road, which makes it feel cozy, even in the middle of winter.

I remember walking up this hill when I was little, after visiting the lagoon to look at the ducks. I remember driving down the hill during high school on yet another coffee run.  Most recently, I remember huffing and puffing my way up the hill with a good friend during the Shamrock Shuffle.

It’s funny how something like a certain stretch of road can make me happy, but it does.  Do you have a favorite stretch of road?

I love Anchorage. I love what it is, what it's been, and what I dream it will be. I share my adventures with DJ (my husband), my fabulous family and friends, two frenchies named Grover and Teddy, and now, all of you. If you love Anchorage too, get in touch - guest posts are welcome!

  1. I haven’t been on that section of road since it was remodelled. You make it sound so cute that I’ll have to give it a try!

    1. You should, it’s really nice! USKH’s landscapre architects worked on the project, they did an amazing job, as usual.
